Let me show you how I turned an unfinished gift crate into an adorable snack station perfect to keep in my home office.

I received a pancake kit basket as a holiday gift. The mix came in this cute little wooden crate. I couldn’t just throw it away, and needed to figure out something to do with it. Then it came to me … a snack station!

Original wooden box that a gift basket came in. This was before the makeover.

Here is the original wooden box the gift basket came in. It held pancake mix on one side and syrup on the other side. You can see why I wouldn’t want to just throw it away.

I wanted it to go in my office and there is a lot of dark wood in there. I used Folk Art Home Decor Wood Tint in the color Walnut which I already had on hand. It's water based which is nice for easy clean up. I do wear gloves while using it. I paint on the wood tint and let it dry completely. More coats equals darker color, and if you like you can wipe off the excess.

The wood tint dries really fast. Here is the completed box.

I added the snacks I wanted into my snack box and placed it in my office. I was able to add tea, a mug, a spoon, some protein bars, and nuts. I placed it next to a container holding water for my tea. I can fill my cup and place it on my mug warmer.

What is a snack station?

A snack station is a place where people can get a little snack and there is usually a variety of choices. It’s also often a place where you can get a beverage like coffee, hot chocolate, or tea, and get refills.

What are good office snacks?

I like to keep a variety of snacks at my snack stations. So for this snack station, I focused on more healthily like tea, nuts, Kind bars, etc. For my kids in our pantry, our snack station consists of one container of salty and sweet snacks and one container of protein snacks.

Sweet Snacks

  • Granola bars or protein bars
  • Trail mix (with nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate pieces)
  • Individually wrapped chocolates or candy
  • Mini muffins or cupcakes
  • Dried fruits (apricots, raisins, apple chips)
  • Yogurt-covered pretzels or raisins
  • Fruit leather or fruit roll-ups

Savory Snacks

  • Chips (potato, tortilla, or veggie chips) with dip (salsa or guacamole)
  • Pretzels or pretzel sticks
  • Popcorn (buttered, kettle, or flavored)
  • Crackers with cheese or cheese spreads
  • Nuts (almonds, peanuts, cashews)
  • Jerky (beef, turkey, or vegan options)
  • Snack-size savory pastries (like mini quiches or empanadas)

Healthy Options

  • Fresh fruit (apples, bananas, oranges, or grapes)
  • Veggie sticks (carrots, celery, cucumbers) with hummus or ranch dip
  • Rice cakes or popcorn cakes
  • Yogurt cups or pouches
  • Hard-boiled eggs (peeled and individually wrapped)
  • Mini packs of whole-grain crackers
  • Edamame or roasted chickpeas

Beverages

  • Bottled water (plain or flavored)
  • Juice boxes or pouches
  • Iced tea or lemonade
  • Canned sparkling water
  • Small cartons of milk (regular or flavored)

Convenient Prepackaged Items

  • Individual snack-size chips or popcorn bags
  • Trail mix or nut packs
  • Cookies in small portions
  • Cup noodles or instant soup packets
  • Peanut butter or cheese snack packs with crackers

Fun Add-Ons

  • DIY snack mixes: Provide small bowls and let people combine items like pretzels, M&Ms, dried fruit, and nuts.
  • Seasonal treats: Include holiday-themed snacks, like candy canes in winter or pumpkin-flavored treats in the fall.

Arrange the station in an organized and visually appealing way with labels and small containers for easy access!

What are some go to snacks?

I always like a variety of sweet, salty, and healthy. For example packages of crackers or chips, some fruit leather, and nuts. This offers a diverse selection and hits all of the tastes people look for in a snack station.
